RITE STATEMENT ON THE TOXIC DRUG PROBLEM
RITE Richmond takes the drug problem in Richmond very seriously. Even one toxic drug death is too many. Every effort must be made to eliminate the production and distribution of illegal drugs. Educating young people about the devastating effects of illegal drugs must be a top priority. Getting drug addicts off the streets and into effective treatment programs must be greatly improved.
The problem for Richmond City Council is that drug enforcement, drug education and addiction treatment are the responsibility of the federal and provincial governments. Richmond City Council has NO power to deal with these problems. The only power the city has is to provide land for housing programs run by the BC Government. RITE Councillors are unhappy with how those programs are run and insist that they must be improved but refusing to provide the land will make the situation worse not better.
RITE Richmond City Councillors have been repeatedly making the point that federal and provincial services for drug enforcement, education, treatment, and secure care must be greatly improved. City Councillors have been portrayed as trying to establish “drug sites” in Richmond when what they expressed was their frustration with BC Government’s approach and their desire have experts recommend improvements.
In seeking to improve the situation, it is important to have factual information about the extent of the toxic drug problem in Richmond and on the criminal activity in the production and distribution of illegal drugs.
Richmond has approximately 4.2% of the total population of BC.
Richmond had 22 toxic drug deaths in 2025 or 1.2% of the total deaths in BC.
Richmond had 5 toxic drug deaths in 2026 to the end of May or 0.8% of the total deaths in BC.
